British Council today announced the 10 finalists in its 2009 Realise Your Dream awards who are vying for one of five opportunities to head to the UK and be immersed in the creative industries. The competition received almost 500 entries and British Council’s director Rebecca Matthews said the standard was the most impressive in the seven years the competition had been running.

“The entries were across a wide range of creative industries and the judging panel was extremely impressed with the level of professionalism, maturity and insight shown,” Ms Matthews said.

This year’s finalists include:

Sasha Ettinger Epstein, documentary film-maker, NSW
Mark Robinson, film-maker, NSW
Gorkem Acaroglu, theatre director/playwright, VIC
Lally Katz, playwright, VIC
Timba Smits, designer and independent publisher, VIC
Mikala Tai, visual arts curator, VIC
Laura Scrivano, theatre deviser, NSW
Fleur Watson, architectural curator, VIC


The scheme awards excellence in Australia’s creative industries by providing financial and professional support to help winners make lasting connections and expand their horizons in one of the world’s most vibrant cultural settings. Finalists will now take part in a final interview on 14 Sepetember and the five winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday 15 September.

The Awards will be hosted by triple j personality Robbie Buck with special creative industry guests including Sydney Theatre Company Directors Andrew Upton & Cate Blanchett.

The five winners, all in the emerging stages of their career, will be flown to the UK by British Airways and receive an $8,000 NAB Cash Passport. Realise Your Dream is a British Council initiative made possible by principal sponsor NAB, in association with British Airways, Stamford Hotels & Resorts, triple j, Access PR and The Glue Society.
